Career Connections Via Distance Learning

Ohio Department of Education’s “Career Connections” initiative is a collection of practical resources for educators, school counselors, families and community members to show students the types of work available.  Even as early as Kindergarten, students are learning about jobs and careers.

Ohio Distance Learning Association members have relevant content to help students make career connections.

K-5 Career Connections

Cleveland Museum of Natural History

What kind of jobs can you find at a museum? If you participate in an elementary school video conference lesson from the Natural History Museum, you'll find out how art and science are combined in many of our careers! How do you make a plastic copy of a dinosaur fossil? Who helped the famous dog "Balto" become a beloved exhibit 85 years ago? Collect insects? Raise porcupines? What do YOU want to do when you grow up?

COSI

COSI's Gadget Works program puts your students in the role of the engineer as they join Prof. Gadgeteer to reverse engineer wind-up toys! You choose between Force and Motion to learn how forces are transferred to generate motion or Simple Machines to learn about pulleys, levers, gears and more. The included kit of materials has everything you need for this interactive exploration of engineering!

INFOhio

Dig into resources to help young students explore the world of work from those learning to read to those reading to learn. All resources are freely available to each Ohio student and teacher. Middle Grades Career Connections

Cleveland Museum of Natural History

What kind of jobs can you find at a museum? Middle school programs from the Natural History Museum can reveal careers you might not realize even exist! From DNA technician, dinosaur fossil casting, dissection specimen preservation or catching frogs to track amphibian diseases-- museum work is mighty cool. Talk with us about how we can get your students excited about careers in science!

COSI

COSI's Engineering Challenge asks your students to learn, explore, design and problem solve along side a COSI Educator as they probe the Red Planet. In the interactive videoconference, students will learn about the harsh conditions on the Martian surface as they compare and contrast with Earth. After the live program, the engineering begins. Your students will be challenged to brainstorm, build, test, share and repeat in a real-world design problem. NASA's Curiosity Rover wheels are wearing out and your students designs could be the answer!
